Aussies, what makes you grateful to be Australian this Australia day?
Is it the fact we're now officially the world's second most highly developed nation? (UN Human Development Index 2009).
Or that we got voted the second most liveable country, after France this year?
Or is it the thousands of pioneers and convicts who endured horrendous lives to establish this wonderful nation, so that we can enjoy all the luxuries we have today which are so rare by world standards?
Or something else?
In addition to what you mentioned, I am grateful for a prosperous society and good results in many world performance indices in the quality of life, public education, health care, economic freedom and the protection of civil liberties and political rights. It is not a perfect society; which one is anyway? But I am grateful that Australia has been perenially ranked among the top in the world in terms of cultural offerings and quality of life.
