KVM Extender: Low cost, low density solution lengthening distance of use between peripherals and computer
Remote Control of a computer or KVM peripherals is provided by the KVM Extender. A transmitter unit and the receiver unit are the key components of these devices. These two units connect the computer to the KVM peripherals via the Cat5/Cat5e/Cat6 cables and provide an affordable solution for remote access. External power is needed on the receiver end only and the transmitter draws power directly from the computer. A user gets the flexibility to place the peripherals wherever he wants and the computer wherever he needs.
These extenders can handle a distance of up to 1000 feet by connecting the local and the remote units via STP/UTP cables. Longer distances can be achieved with the use of the KVM over Fiber version. Key features of these devices include a plug and play solution and easy installation. Purely a hardware device, this is a common extender along with the USB Extender, the VGA extender and the Cat5 extender. This device does not require any software set up. No network configurations are required in order to operate the extenders. High quality VGA or DVI video resolutions are maintained by the Cat5 KVM Extenders and some versions are available with optional stereo audio, RS232 or infra red control. Units are compatible with operating systems such as DOS, Windows 3x, 9x, 2000, NT, ME, XP, Novell, Linux, UNIX. Among the various models available, keyboard and mouse control is accomplished by using PS2 or USB peripherals.
The KVM over Cat5 units are also available with a dual user option enabling two users to access the same computer thereby making work more efficient. While one user can switch between and control two computers, a second user can control one computer. The computers can be controlled through the local as well as the remote console. Since these extenders are used in places where the computer is inaccessible to the user and where transactions on various points of operation need to be monitored from one location, they are perfect for isolated server rooms, small home offices, financial institutions, industrial applications, hospitals, commercial arenas and government and military sectors. In all these places, the main computer is centralized in one secure, environmentally controlled location and connected to peripherals via the KVM Extender.
